Weekend Craft

First of all, Happy Easter! I plan to do an Easter post soon, but I hope to include some picture of our outing later today.

This post is not a kid post, though one managed to sneak her way in.  Last weekend I did a relatively easy project, which was adding a backdrop to enhance our new built-ins.  I probably got the idea from Pinterest a long time ago.  Some people paint or wallpaper the backs of their shelves, but I wanted something that would not leave any residue.  I used foam board and wrapping paper.  The most annoying part was that standard foam board is about four inches short for the width of our shelves.  After cutting across the top to match the height of the shelves, I had to cut out a section of the excess and tape it to side of the board to increase my width.  Then I just taped a piece of wrapping onto each board and set it up against the back of the shelf.   I did have to be pretty careful with the wrapping paper and prevent kids from touching it since it wrinkles so easily.

Here are the before picutres:

And after:

I like the result. I originally pictured something navy blue and graphic, like a chevron, but I didn't have the patience to order something online and wait for it to arrive. I ended up finding the stripes at Target, and figured I can change it out pretty easily.  I originally thought I could make them two-sided and switch them around on a whim, but since wrapping paper is pretty fragile and the boards are wedged in pretty tightly, I definitely will ruin the wrapping paper when I pull them out.  At least the foam boards will be reusable though.  The project cost was just around $20 since the foam boards happened to be on sale for $1 a piece.  I also had to buy an x-acto knife.  Now I'll be able to change the look for just the price of the wrapping paper.  That's kind of neat.
